Alpha
Channels
An alpha channel is a type of mask. The mask is
called a Channel Mask, which changes the transparency of the edit.
Alpha channels define a selection in black, white, and
varying shades of gray pixels. In other words, alpha channels store selections
as 8-bit gray scale images.
You can create a mask by duplicating a color channel and
then editing the channel by using painting and editing tools and filters
. Key Frames
A key frame is a single still image in a sequence that
happens at an important point in that sequence; key frames are put throughout a
sequence to create points of motion. One example of key frames could be an
animation of a person walking, having key frames each time the legs move.

3D Layers
3D text this is used to show the writing is flying all over the place

Creating the illusion of depth in an image. Depth is where you have the X, Y & Z axis in after effects. It appears when you press the cube.
Layers
All compositions have layers so they can be edited easily.
There are different types
of layers in a composition, which include, Video
and audio layers that are based on footage items that you import, such as still
images, movies, and audio tracks. These can be then broken down and edited
easily singularly. You can create layers for cameras, adjustment layers, null
objects and lights. Synthetic layers hold text, shape and other visual layers.
Also pre composition layers use compositions as their source footage items.
A Layer that is used in this background in the intro when th camera goe throughout the simposn font looking like there are three still images and you look into the centre

If you look also the power plant looks like the main layer because it look above all the other layers in the intro.

If you look at the two kids the statue they have placed the layer right so it look like the kids are on top of the statue

2D Elements
A 2D element is a 3 or 4 sided shape that can be displayed on an X and Y
axis. There are three types of 2D elements: shell, solid and plate.
A shell is a linear one-dimensional element that has constant values on
the X and Y axis. A 2D solid is a two-dimensional element that is either
quadrilateral or triangular, much as a shell element would be in a 3D model.
A 2D plate is a two-dimensional element that represents a solid on the X
and Y axis.
Also, a 2D plate can be used as a template in drawing and design.
Mattes
A matte is where you use a
mask to blank out part of an image so that you can replace that image with
another.
