“No Place for a hero” By Reggie Menzies

EXT – Seaside – Afternoon

The sea is in view as the sunsets shinning on it, we hear a car revving in the distance as the car gets closer we see a closer look at the car passing by the sea.

INT – CAR – CONTINIOUS

2 guys are in the car, they are brothers, the brother driving is the younger brother Mitch, he has blond hair, he’s wearing just a plain black shirt, he’s laughing and joking with his brother John, John has slicked back hair, he’s wearing sunglasses and a plain white top. Eventually the car comes to a stand-still and the pair look out the window and are being looked at by three men in hoods we don’t see their faces. They all nod towards John, and he nods back.

mitch

Who are they?

john

No one, don’t worry.

He says smiling towards Mitch.

INT/EXT – CAR – MOMENTS LATER

Mitch is now sitting in the car alone, John leans in and fist pumps his brother.

john

Thanks for the lift bro

mitch

No problem man, I’ll see you back home tonight?

john

Yeah, I shouldn’t be too late, just seeing the guys and will grab the bus.

mitch

Cool, see ya then

INT – CAR – CONTINOUSLY

Mitch drives off and John walks off towards some house.

EXT – PUB – LATE AFTERNOON

The sun is on its way down, and Mitch is having a pint with his friend, his friend has long blonde hair and is fairly skinny. We don’t hear the conversation as the music drowns it out.

INT – HOME – EVENING

Mitch walks into his home which looks a little run down, like it hasn’t been cleaned in a while. He’s got a crate of 6 beers and is drinking one of them.

John!

EXT – SHED – EVENING

Mitch walks into the garden to see John sitting in a chair he drops his beers and darts towards him. When he gets to him there is blood everywhere, he checks his pulse and it appears his neck has been slit. Mitch pulls his phone out to call emergency services.

judge (v.o)

Mitchell Harris you’ll be sentenced to 30 years in jail for the murder of your brother John Harris.

Fade out:

BLACK SCREEN – 2 YEARS LATER

JUDGE (V.O)

Due to new evidence found in, Mitchell Harris has been found Not Guilty for the murder of his brother John Harris and will be released.

EXT – COURT – DAY

The sun is high in the sky shinning down on Mitch who walks down some steps, he’s got jeans, and a tight black top on. He looks up takes a breath from the fresh air. Then walks ahead of him where he finds waiting for him black sports car with the keys sitting on the top. He takes the key and gets into the car.

INT – CAR – CONTINIOUSLY

Mitch feels the wheel of his car. And then puts the key into the ignition and starts the car. He rev’s the engine to its max to hear the roar of his car again and smiles.

EXT – COUNTRYSIDE – MOMENTS LATER

The sun shines down on Mitch’s black sports car as he races through the countryside, swerving around corners, with lovely views around him of the empty countryside.

EXT – STREET – FLASHBACK – AFTERNOON

The sun is beginning to set, the area is a gloomy part of the neighborhood, and it looks run down and old. John is amongst a group of men in hood who we cant see and are dealing with drugs. Speeding in comes John’s brother Mitch and storms over to him.

Get in the car John

john

What the f**k are you doing here

mitch

Get in the f**king car!

john

Get out of here

mitch

I’m not asking you, I’m telling you, lets go.

EXT – STREET – FLSHBACK – CONTINUOUS

John gives in drops his head and gets into the car. While the group he was with stand their hands in the shouting towards him to come back.

INT – CAR – FLASHBACK – CONTINUOUS

Mitch drives the car in a rush looking at John aggressively while he sits leaning against the window looking out in a strop.

mitch

You can’t keep doing this John. I can’t keep doing this.

john

Doing what?

mitch

Don’t get dumb with me! You know what I’m talking about, you can’t keep doing this, you can’t live your life like this. You got to get your life on track John. What would Dad say.

john

Dad’s dead.

mitch

And that’s gonna be your excuse for the rest of your life. If you keep this up John you will be the one dead.

john

And what you do is so great and better then anything I’ve done!

Shouting and aggressively

mitch

I just want you to have a normal life; it doesn’t have to be this way!

INT – CAR – PRESENT – AFTERNOON

Mitch sits in his car looking towards a run down looking house. He leans into his glove compartment pulls out pieces of paper looks at them and at the house. On the paper is writing and a photo of a man. Mitch puts the papers back and pulls out a handgun. And tucks it into his trousers.  The man from the paper opens his front door and leaves his house.

EXT – HOUSE – CONTINIOUS

In a rush Mitch violently rushes out of his car slamming the door and walks quickly towards the man in the papers. The man looks at him and notices him he turns to run as he does this Mitch pulls out his gun shooting him in the leg as he falls to the ground Mitch strolls over to him and kicks him onto his back.

mitch

The people responsible for killing my brother, where can I find them.

drug dealer

You going down a path you don’t wanna go believe me!

mitch

Tell me where I can find them and I will let you die quickly!

drug dealer

I had nothing to do with what happened to you!

EXT – DRIVEWAY – CONTINIOUS

Mitch raises puts his gun to the dealers head and grabs him by his neck viciously throwing him about.

mitch

Tell me where I can find them!

Shouting in anger whilst throwing him.

drug dealer

Henry Whitmore that’s all I have alright that’s all I have

mitch

That’s enough

EXT – DRIVEWAY – CONTINIOUS

Mitch shoots the drug dealer in the head turns around and strolls back into his car speeding off as this happens the sirens of police cars coming toward the area are heard in the background.

EXT/INT – HOUSE – EVENING

Mitch strolls up to a house, the house unlike the others looks modern not run down and clean. He knocks at the door furiously until someone opens it. As soon as the door opens Mitch storms inside, the person open the door is a young guy, he’s average height small build, wears glasses and has ginger hair.

mitch

I need more information Stuart, I need you to find out where I can find Henry Whitmore

stuart

Look Mitch you can’t just come round like this! I’ve done a lot for you I gave you a lead!

mitch

Listen to me, I need to find this guy! Then it will be done!

Mitch grabs Stuart by the scruff of his shirt.

stuart

Alright, alright! Easy!

INT – LOUNGE – EVENING

Mitch falls back onto a chair after his short burst of rage, looking down, his eyes begin watering as everything begins to take its toll on him.

mitch

I’ve lost… everything. My parents, my brother, my job, my life. These guys took everything I had away from me. I have to do this. I have to take away from them what they took from me!

Stuart reaches over to Mitch and places his hand calmly on his shoulder for comfort.

stuart

I’ll do what I can alright.

Mitch looks up at Stuart and gives him a nod to say his thanks to Stuart, Stuart walks off into a room where is computer is and Mitch follows

INT – STUDY – EVENING

Scrolling through intelligence databases, which Stuart has hacked into to find information the pair looks through files, articles trying to get relevant information and nothing is found apart from an address.

That’s it

mitch

That’s all we got?

stuart

This guy is like a ghost in the system.

mitch

It’s a lead.

EXT – STREET – EVENING

Mitch strolls out of Stuarts house towards his car. Stuart stands at the door watching him go, Mitch gets into his car and pulls the window down.

mitch

Thanks for everything Stuart, you wont see me around anymore!

INT – HOME (FLASHBACK) – LIVING ROOM – DAY

John is sitting in the living room, he looks relaxed, wearing a tracksuit, his feet are up as he sits there playing computer games. And then in walks Mitch, his face is down he is about to deliver some bad news. He looks like he is holding back the tears.

mitch

John, switch that off I need to talk to you

john

Hold on its nearly finished

mitch

Just switch it off!

Says with more aggression and goes over and switches the console off.

john

What the fuck Mitch!

INT – LIVING ROOM – CONTINIOUS

Mitch sits in the chair next to John and puts his head in his hand and then pushes his hair back as he prepares to tell his brother the news.

john

What is it Mitch, you’re scaring me!

mitch

It’s Mum and Dad.

john

What? Has something happened to them? What?

mitch

They’re dead John.

John

What, what do you mean they’re dead. They can’t be dead. I just saw them a couple of hours ago. That’s not a funny joke to pull. You’re joking right.

John stands up and walks about looking confused and worried whilst frustratingly pushing his hair back.

mitch

I’m not joking John, they’re gone.

Mitch bites his tongue before letting John know it’s true and begins to cry.

INT – LIVING ROOM – CONTINIOUS

John grabs the controller for his game and hurtles it across the room in anger! And then collapses to his knees holding his hair back, in tears, broken by the news of his parents.

EXT – STREET (PRESENT) – EARLY MORNING

Mitch does not wait around to find out what in the house for him to find. He pulls out his gun checks the ammo to see there is none left and then finds the knife he has in the glove compartment and puts it in his pocket. He gets out of his car and walks with pace towards the door with anger written all over his face. He knocks on the door and a man opens it. He is average height, fairly young and looks off of his face.

Who, who the fuck are you?

mitch

I was gonna ask you the same thing

thug

Fuck off!

INT – DRUG DEALER HOME – EARLY MORNING

The guy goes to shut the door on Mitch who then puts his foot in the way stopping him from closing the door. He then re opens the door and steps outside forcing Mitch to take a couple of steps back.

thug

Listen I don’t know who the fuck you are, but you’re about to mess with the wrong people!

mitch

You messed with the wrong people when you decided to kill my brother, John Harris

thug

Ha, that’s what this is about? If I were you, I’d walk away, you don’t wanna go in there believe me.

EXT – STREET – EARLY MORNING

Mitch looks at the open door of the house and begins pacing towards it until the guy steps in his way and pushes him back, causing Mitch to start a fight, the pair lock fists ending in Mitch stabbing the guy multiple times in his side.

Go on, go in, *laughing* you’ll wish you stayed in jail!

INT – DRUG HOME – EARLY MORNING

The house looks a mess as Mitch slowly creeps around looking for information on the people that killed his brother. He finds a news article about his release from jail. He looks around the upstairs but can’t find anything.

EXT – GARDEN – EARLY MORNING

As the sun begins rising Mitch walks out into the garden and see’s a character standing at the other side of the garden with his back facing towards Mitch, he appears to be smoking.

You just couldn’t help yourself but get involved.

Who are you?

EXT – GARDEN – CONTINIOUS

The character turns around throwing his cigarette to the ground, Mitch looks towards him trying to see his face. When he eventually steps into the light we finally see who it is Mitch has been chasing down. His own brother he thought was dead. John appears in front of him.

mitch

J, John? How?

john

I faked it. To get rid of you!

mitch

Why? How?

john

I needed you out of my life. I couldn’t do anything without you on my back and so we got rid of you. But yet you’re here in my way.

mitch

If Mum and Dad saw you now, they’d

john

They’d what? They would do NOTHING! They always looked to you, never to me!

mitch

You know that’s not true John, how could you let it come to this!

EXT – GARDEN – EARLY MORNING

Mitch turns away in disgust and is heartbroken by this that his head drops; he drops his knife to the ground and walks, only for John to chase after him.

john

Don’t walk away from me!

EXT – GARDEN – CONTINIOUS

The two brothers’ begin throwing punches until John eventually gets Mitch to the ground and begins choking him, in the background we hear sirens of police cars getting louder as the head towards the home. In arms reach is Mitch’s knife as Mitch starts fading unconscious.

INT – LIVING ROOM (FLASHBACK) – DAY

Mitch and John are in living room playing on a console laughing and joking together, the only time they’ve looked happy apart from the beginning.

EXT – GARDEN (PRESENT) – EARLY MORNING

Mitch grabs the knife and quickly stabs his brother through the neck and throws him off himself. The camera begins fading along with Mitch as he puts his hands on his head and sits on his knees as the police run into the garden handcuffing him.

BLANK SCREEN

TEXT – MITCH HARRIS WAS ARRESTED AND SERVED A LIFE SENTENCE FOR HIS CRIMES.

HE DIED AFTER TWO WEEKS IN JAIL, TAKING HIS OWN LIFE.
